Handyman in Plantation, FL

Plantation grew up around trees and big yards. The first homes went up in 1947 on lots of about an acre, each sold with a small orchard, and the city incorporated in 1953. It was named a Tree City in 1980, and on many streets the shade trees now stand well above the rooflines.

Mature trees and older houses make for a specific work list: gutters that fill fast, fascia that never quite dries and original interiors ready for an update. That is the work we are set up for here.

Plantation's houses

The original city took shape east of University Drive. In the 1960s and 70s, building pushed west, including Jacaranda, which Gulfstream began developing in 1964. Plantation Acres, annexed in 1973, is kept as a rural district with large lots.

Popcorn ceilings in a pre-1980 house wait for an asbestos lab result before anything gets scraped; if asbestos turns up, that ceiling belongs to a licensed abatement company. Old paint gets the same caution: on pre-1978 homes we test before sanding, and a positive test sends the work to an EPA lead-safe certified firm.

A whole-house paint job or a long run of fascia can pass the $2,500 limit on handyman work in Florida, so larger jobs like those get referred to a licensed contractor.

HOAs and neighborhood rules

Rules vary a lot by neighborhood here. Gated and newer communities usually have an HOA with vendor requirements: our insurance certificate on file, gate access arranged by the homeowner and work limited to certain hours. Tell us where you live and we sort out our part before the visit.

We do not trim trees. Branches rubbing the roof or hanging over the gutters are a job for a tree service, and it helps to have them cut back before we clean gutters or replace fascia.

What Plantation homeowners ask for

Big trees and older homes set the list:

  • Gutter cleaning with downspout flushing, $169 for a single-story home with up to about 200 feet of gutter
  • Rotted fascia and trim boards replaced, non-structural only
  • Popcorn ceiling removal once the asbestos test is clear
  • Interior painting, $499 for a bedroom up to 12 by 14 feet, paint at cost
  • Weatherstripping and door sweeps on older doors, $149 for the first door

Plantation through the year

Shade trees shed leaves and debris into gutters all year, and the heavy rains of late May through October push that water over the edge and onto the fascia. Fascia rot shows up most where trees keep a roof edge in shade, because the wood never fully dries.

Doors in original houses often have weatherstripping that wore out long ago. A new seal and door sweep keeps out wind-driven summer rain, and the bugs that come in with it.

In hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), owners with panels or accordions can book us to hang them, and we stow loose yard items and furniture on the same visit. After a storm, we walk the outside of the house and send photos to owners who are away; that check is $149, or $99 for home watch clients.

Questions from Plantation homeowners

How often should gutters be cleaned in Plantation?

With heavy tree cover, twice a year is a good starting point: once before the rains and once after. Homes right under large trees may need more. Single-story cleaning with downspout flushing is $169.

Can you repair rotted fascia under my trees?

Yes, as long as the rot stops at the boards. We put in primed wood at $22 per linear foot or rot-proof PVC at $28, with a $249 minimum. Rot that has moved into rafter tails or framing needs a licensed contractor, and we will tell you if we find it.

Is my older Plantation house a problem for popcorn ceiling removal?

Only in that we test first. If the home was built before 1980, we take samples and wait for the lab before any scraping; sampling is $49 plus the lab's cost. A negative result means removal starts at $2 per square foot, and a positive one goes to a licensed asbestos abatement company.

Do you charge for travel to Plantation?

Some addresses, yes. Plantation is a little west of where we usually run, so the trip may cost $39 or $69 extra, based on how far out you are. We tell you before booking.
